Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
