Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

The incident follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.
