Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured experts in multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
